WOW. It’s been a hot minute since I posting on here but I just got back from Puerto Rico after spending a week in August with my wife, my mom, and my cousin Joey.
Unfortunately It did rain a ton while we were there, but honestly it didn’t really slow us down. We still managed to enjoy ourselves, walking through Old San Juan, checking out the colorful streets, and just soaked in the vibe. The best part was reconnecting with old friends and some family we hadn’t seen in a while.
Later Note:
Earlier this year I read War Against All Puerto Ricans by Nelson Antonio Denis, and it really shifted something in me. Learning about the island’s history—the struggles, the resilience—made me want to return with a new perspective and a deeper understanding. It also made me reflect on my own relationship to Puerto Rico, to the language, and to my identity as a Nuyorican. Growing up, I was never taught Spanish and often felt disconnected from that side of my roots.
As an adult, I’ve felt this pull to go back, to build a more honest and meaningful connection with the island, the people, and the culture. This trip gave me that chance—and what made it even more special was being able to share it with family and the people who matter most. It was a moment of reconnection, and one I’ll carry with me moving forward.
